Follow brands and see climate/political data for them

An app to track companies/brands and the money they give to politicians/PACs/lobbyists, how that relates to climate (GHG emissions, wastewater, etc), and ways to immediately communicate with the companies/politicians. We're also ranking companies based on the sustainability.

Solution context

While there are many resources available for people to see voting records for politicians, political donations, and even sustainability information for various companies, synthesizing that information can be difficult for many people.  The way the information is spread across multiple sources makes it even more difficult to understand the direct impact that companies have on our climate, but also the more indirect impacts the companies have on legislation regarding our environment.

We are creating a user friendly interface that will let you compare the sustainability of your favorite products and the companies that own them.

Solution description

Our solution would allow individuals to track and search the brands they use and better understand the impact global corporations have on the environment.  Furthermore, people would be able to easily contact legislators and the companies through social media, email, by phone, etc.  We've created a prototype of the database we would use to launch a full-scale application using data scraped from various sources as well as APIs from OpenSecrets.com.  For the database we've used the Django Rest Framework, but the same concept could easily be implemented using most modern database systems.  We've also created a prototype of the front-end (the website itself) using ReactJS, which is a modern JavaScript library created by Facebook that allows for clean, interactive, and user-friendly interfaces.
