The competitive environment at the Climathon helped us focus on our main goals and bring foodshelf to life.
Foodshelf
An app for neighbours to reduce food-waste in Zurich
The challenge
In 2016, the City of Zurich wanted to find ways to encourage citizens and households to buy and eat more climate-friendly food, and to reduce food-waste.
Emin Khateeb and Florian Gyger, two software developers from Zurich, came up with the idea for the foodshelf, an app where you can offer unwanted food to your neighbours using three simple steps: Take a picture of the food, post it to a virtual food shelf, and finally get in contact with your neighbours and hand out the free food.
What's next
This solution was developed at the Climathon in 2016 and the app went live a year later in October 2017. The founders now want to focus on getting more users on the platform and establish hotspots where the app is widely used. The app is available for iOS and Android phones.
