Challenge description

Water and sanitation demand and supply is a key developmental challenge that is made even dire with the threat of climate change in Nairobi. In particular, the biggest challenge remains how to supply clean and affordable water to the citizens of Nairobi where more than half of them live in informal settlements. For the residents to meet their daily needs, the challenges of water loses, intermittent supply and quality need to be addressed especially with the advent of extreme weather events related to climate change and the ever ballooning population in the city. Sanitation facilities for this population is critical especially with the lack of sustainable infrastructure for wastewater emanating from inadequate sewer systems and connectivity challenges.

Challenge vision

The increasing number of industries in the city calls for a structured and innovative approach towards waste water management to deter environmental challenges of direct discharge into water bodies and other ecosystem based resources. This will go a long way towards reducing water borne diseases, improve the livelihoods of citizens and ensure basic needs are met from affordable supply of water of high quality.
