How can technology support African farmers with smarter irrigation?

Water is a precious good in countries like Africa. Too much of it is wasted for agriculture, while it would be necessary as drinking water as well. With your help, we want to reduce the waste of water in these scenarios, with the help of technology.

To reduce the waste of water, we want to create a smarter system to water plants. This system consists of a small IoT Device, which monitors the environment and soil and controls the irrigation of the plants.

The following points should be considered when developing the solution:

The system needs to be affordable for everybody and its usage should be profitable in a short amount of time.
Components should be easily obtainable and in large quantities.
Algorithm to determine the amount of water, based on current quality of soil, environmental factors as sun intensity as well as the type of plant.

We will provide you with the parts for a prototype. However, the final solution needs to include a parts list with recommended parts.

Challenge vision

Our vision is to reduce the amount of wasted water on agriculture while helping people in 3rd world countries. The outcome will be a system which supports this vision.
Nonetheless, the specific implementations, parts, algorithms and features are totally up to you and your creativity.
