How can we change our daily behaviour for making a cleaner Fierbinti -Targ city with efficient waste management and high standards regarding nature conservation?
Waste management remains a key challenge for Romania, according to the Commission’s ‘Early Warning Report’ (2018), Romania is considered at risk of non-compliance with the 2020 municipal waste recycling target of 50 %. As far as nature conservation is concerned, implementing the Nature Directives remains a considerable challenge. Romania’s Natura 2000 network appears to suffer from the lack of an appropriate administrative capacity framework and the absence of updated knowledge and data. Fierbinti-Targ is no stranger to these facts.
Challenge description
Fierbinti-Targ is located in the south-east of Romania, its population is around 5000 inhabitants, in 2004 it was made into a city, but as years pass the city fails to develop properly, the economic development surpasses the capacity of the local authorities to deal with waste management and nature conservation. The northern part of Fierbinti-Targ is part of Natura 2000 network, despite the importance of this natural conservation site at national and European level, Fierbinti-Targ “hosts” a landfill next to the natural conservation site in Grecii de Jos.
The problem of waste management starts from dumping of waste in non designated places by ignorant citizens and the lack of response from the local authorities. Many “dispose” their garbage by burning it, they do not care that they are polluting the environment as burning of garbage releases many toxic and greenhouse gases. The behavioral change of the citizens about producing and disposing waste can bring huge difference in the waste management of Fierbinti Targ city and nature conservation.
