Zero emission construction site

Creating the built environment in a sustainable way

Urbanization is here! More and more buildings are being constructed and the construction itself is part of their carbon footprint. How can we find ways to reduce the environmental impact of the construction process?

Challenge description

In 2015 the Climate agreement was signed in Paris by 50 countries and the Netherlands adopted its goals in the Climate law in 2019. This means companies like Dura Vermeer have to reduce 50% of its greenhouse gas emission in 2030 and reduce 95% in 2050. A major source of gas emissions is a construction site with all its heavy vehicles and construction materials. In addition to this construction sites within the city result in problems for accessibility, safety and health in the inner cities. Therefore more and more municipalities close down their city for heavy vehicles.

Dura Vermeer has a lot of projects in the inner cities and aims to have a zero-emission construction site. At the moment there are a lot of heavy vehicles and materials needed for new buildings, renovation and transformation projects.  This could affect projects involving housing, offices, reconstructing roads, but also shopping malls, hospitals, hotels and its surrounding terrain.

Challenge vision

We challenge participants to think about innovative solutions to decrease the emissions on construction sites to 0% in the period 2020-2025.
