Energy transition

How Nijmegen can be energy-neutral in future?

We can draw a great deal of energy from the sun and wind. That is smart and necessary. We are transitioning to a new system of sustainable energy.

Challenge description

Solving the global warming problem is regarded as the most important challenge facing humankind in the 21st century. The capacity of the earth system to absorb greenhouse gas emissions is already exhausted, and under the Paris climate agreement, emissions must cease by 2040 or 2050. Barring a breakthrough in carbon sequestration technologies, this requires an energy transition away from fossil fuels such as oil, natural gas, lignite, and coal. Available technologies are nuclear power (fission) and the renewable energy sources wind, hydropower, solar power, geothermal, and marine energy.

in Nijmegen we want to focus on renewable energy resources, what are the available sources of renewable energy in Nijmegen and how they can be used in urban context?

Challenge vision

Nijmegen wants to be energy-neutral by 2045. But earlier is fine too!

Nijmegen

The problem of citizen involvement seems paradoxical: Most damage occurs on the property of citizens, yet the citizens are not motivated to take precipitation adaptation measures. So how they can be engaged in local adaptation plans and participate in building a climate resilient city?
