Challenge description
The climate impacts of the “Ternois – 7 Valleys” territory have been assessed through the PCAET (Plan Climat Air Energie Territorial).
The key figures:
- The greenhouse gas emission are estimated with 33% from the agriculture (vs. 19% for the national emission), due to its predominance in the territory. The other sectors are the housing, the industry and transportation.
- the territory captures and stocks 4% of its emissions through prairies and forests.
The region of Nord Pas de Calais hosted several new projects to reduce the environmental impact of agriculture: from the mitigation of greenhouse gas to the use of pesticides. For example, it is the first region in France to introduce a project to decrease Greenhouse gas emissions. Dairy producers implemented this project for the dairy farm`s low carbon program. Other groups of producers (called DEPHY Group or 30 000 Group) work on new practices to reduce pesticides uses.
Nord Pas de Calais is a region with a will to work on climate change. That is why the first Climathon has been launched in this region.
Global warming touches all sectors: agriculture, transport, housing, etc… Each actor can tackle the challenge. For the agriculture sector, they can bring solutions such as Carbone sequestration through meadows and trees, production diversity with various outputs and optimization of the agricultural practices.
Challenge vision
The challenge is to find relevant, realistic, and practical solutions shared by the local community, and that those solutions are economically sustainable. With this context, the contributors of this event identified several domains for the agriculture sector:
- What are the solutions to increase the Carbone sequestration?
- What are the solutions to reduce the impact of transportation?
- What are the solutions to reduce the impact of housing?
- How to develop the energy production in the area? What are its limitations, and how to overcome them?
- How to reconnect farming and feeding to preserve our health and environment?
- What are the solutions to reduce the Carbone emission for the agricultural sector?
Those challenges, defined explicitly for the “Tenois – 7 Valleys” area, can be extrapolated to other territories.
