Challenge description
The city of Munich aims to become climate-neutral by 2050. To reach this goal, the contribution across all societal layers is needed. Companies in Munich can and should use their leverage and together mitigate CO2 emissions – this is how the “Klimapakt Münchner Wirtschaft” was founded: as one of the most important climate change mitigation measures of Munich’s climate protection program (“IHKM - Integriertes Handlungsprogramm Klimaschutz der Landeshaupstadt München”).
The first “Klimapakt” edition took place from 2015-2017. The main achievement was the agreement of Munich’s 15 biggest companies to voluntarily reduce their CO2 emissions in Munich by >40.000 tons within this period. This goal was overachieved: in the end, >48.000 tons were reduced. Besides that, the first common projects were realized (e.g., “JobRide”, a database to organize car-sharing for commuters).
Starting in fall 2019, Klimapakt² is the second edition of the Klimapakt. Participants will again be the biggest companies in Munich (=companies with the highest number of employees). The following 15 (final number to be defined) companies will participate in Klimapakt², encompassing approx. 100.000 employees in Munich: group of participants to be defined (the final brochure of the first Klimapakt (in “additional info”, in German only) provides basic information about the members of the first Klimapakt. Most of them will be part of Klimapakt²).
In this second edition of the Klimapakt, a focus will lay on realising joint projects between the companies to collectively reduce CO2 emissions in Munich. Throughout the Climathon, projects shall be developed which show how Munich´s companies can unite in the fight against climate change.
These projects could:
- Either tackle a collective problem in Munich and develop a new joint product/solution which the companies realise together.
- Or contribute to a reduced CO2 emission at the companies’ sites in Munich and focus on internal activities (e.g., green canteens; energy saving in the office etc.)
- Consider topics like digitalisation, biodiversity, awareness-raising measures, climate-friendly nutrition, energy (additional topics possible)
Challenge vision
Collaborative project solutions should
- … lead to CO2 emissions savings in Munich and be conducted in Munich (reduce Munich’s climate footprint in order to become a climate neutral city by 2050).
- … at least make five Klimapakt companies work together.
- … focus on the core competencies of the participating companies
- … take into account the potential reach of the Klimpakt network (e.g. approx. 100.000 employees in Munich).
- … be ambitious but realistic according to timelines (expect top level involvement of both companies and the City of Munich, thus consultations and finalizations will take time) and context (multinational companies with a variety of tasks and responsibilities)
- … have the potential to attract a great deal of attention in Munich and therefore increase the visibility of the Klimapakt Network in Munich
- … be realisable by 2050.
- … contain first milestones until the end of the Klimapakt2 in 2021.
