Sustainable urban mobility

How can we provide a service that would be both user and environmentally friendly?

With a growing number of tourists in both Matera and the region, it is now even harder for inhabitants and visitors to commute. The new railway started operating, however, connections are few, which makes people use their cars.

Challenge description

Matera already made some steps to become the green capital of culture, although there is still room for other system innovations. More tourists are expected to arrive as of this year, both from Italy and abroad, which requires adequate solutions for mobility. Additionally, residents should still be able to commute normally both inside Matera and the region Basilicata, which can be solved by introducing new services in the town, such as shared rides. This could cut air pollution, free the historical centre from extensive traffic and ensure better quality of residents' life and better experience of tourists. More and more people depend on tourism as a source of income, but the capacities should not be exceeded in order to ensure sustainability and preservation of cultural heritage that is under UNESCO's list.

Challenge vision

The output of the Climathon could represent resources in future projects of Matera's public and private sector. Solutions could focus on providing local authorities or public transport company with relevant ideas and data, as well as on raising awareness of civic society and local NGOs who could lobby for more sustainable future of the town and its people. We would also like to empower young people to engage in their local communitites and influence decision makers.

Together we can make Matera and the world a better place to live in
