Challenge description
If we take a look at our landscape (Carpi and the larger “Unione delle Terre d’Argine” region) it is possible to see two clear elements. Firstly, the conformation of the Po Valley, a completely flat territory without any kind of hills, full of environmental heritages, farms, and clusters of industries. Secondly, the presence of the cities like Carpi, Soliera, Campogalliano, and Novi di Modena, with a constellation of districts and villages around them (Fossoli, Cortile, Santa Croce, San Marino…), which are all relatively close to each other, all within a distance of 15-20 km.
Although both the natural landscape and the close distances provide the best conditions for cycling instead of driving, the urban organization of our towns still gives preference to cars as the main mode of transportation.
Challenge vision
How can we reduce the environmental impact of human transit?
During the Climathon, we would like to consider and promote new ideas for how we can help people who mainly travel by car in urban areas and the countryside, to leave their cars at home and start cycling to the workplace, the mall, the city center, and wherever else they might need to go within the city boundaries, even under changing weather conditions.
Thus, we need to focus on new ways to improve and push the urban planning and new concepts of bicycle paths forward, we need new technologies to make the use of bicycles easier and safer for everyone and a system that would reward those who stop or decrease their use of cars. Moreover, the implementation of public transportation and carpooling are also practical means to tackle the problem caused by cars’ emissions in our atmosphere.
