Challenge description

Summary :

Smooth and safe traffic is a common goal. To this end, reduction of autosolism turns out to be one of the major levers. How can we develop the potential of already existing or new collaborative mobility solutions and encourage their use to reduce traffic in urban and peri-urban areas ?

Context :

Although the benefits of smooth traffic are obvious and multiple (economic, time saving, ecological, quality of life, etc.), the reality of the Canton of Geneva is quite different, because the density of traffic continues to grow. That is why the decrease in self-sufficiency - with a vehicle occupancy rate of just 1.27 people in Geneva - reprensents a significant potential for solution.

However, the inhabitants of the region between the Greater Geneva area and the entrance to the city of Geneva continue to use their cars on a daily basis. As proof, shared vehicles account for only 1.5% of trips, despite the existence of a well-stocked offer.

The challenge is therefore to think about shared mobility solutions - innovative or already existing - that are destined to be used on a larger scale, excluding conventional public transport (off-topic here). This will include removing the main barrieres identified to carpooling (fear of the unknown, lack of guarantee on the return journey, etc., part of the potential solutions to this problem.

Challenge vision

Expected Result (from participants) : 

The subject of the research includes self-sufficiency in the Canton of Geneva - in particular motorists who do not live in the City of Geneva but in the urban, peri-urban and urban areas. Utilities or commercial transport are not considered a priority.

The Canton of Geneva is looking for mechanisms and tools to develop the potential of existing collabortive mobility solutions and encourage their use, even if innovative ideas are also welcome. These solutions must take into consideration the importance of the behavioral aspect of the users and non-users of the solution.

At the end of the Climathon, the most interesting exploratory solutions will be potentially tested at the scale of the Canton.

Tips:

During the Climathon, participants are invited to familiarize themselves, in the first instance, with the current context of the challenge through research and surveys / interviews with the target audience; online (internet) and / or in the public spaces of the City:

• What are the brakes and motivations for using existing collaborative mobility solutions ?
• What are the different stakeholder groups related to this challenge ?
• What are the solutions developed abroad, in similar contexts, that respond to this problem ?
• Habits: how to change habits (reflexes, confining oneself to one's comfort zone, fighting apriori, deconstructing stereotypes, etc.) ?
• What could be learned from behavioral change mechanisms for past successful projects and failed projects ?
• Would it be possible to restrict the use of vehicles to non-carpoolers ?
• Should we set up areas prohibited to self-tourism ?
• Are these solutions complementary to those offered by public transport ?
