Human behavior

Changing human behaviour

Climate is changing. Our behavior should too.

Young people are the first generation to feel the effect of climate change and the last generation who can do something. People learn from each other and change their behavior accordingly. How can we strengthen “social learning” on good environmental practices and habits?

Challenge description

Three in one!

Water management: Do you think about the value of each drop of water when you open the tap? Although the Earth's surface is 71% covered by water, the fresh water represents only 3% of the total water. The demand for water is expected to double by 2050: 2/3 of the population will face a serious shortage of drinking water. Water is one of the most precious assets we have, but it is not inexhaustible: we must learn not to waste it. There are many everyday situations where waste is just around the corner: from personal hygiene to cleaning the house to irrigating the plants. We often consume much more water than we need. And yet, very little is needed to reduce waste and the bill. Pollution, population growth and uncontrolled exploitation of this precious resource have reduced water per capita by 40%. In Italy the average daily consumption of the population is around 213 liters per person, more than all other European countries. What to do? The first step is to avoid waste.

Food waste: How to develop a feasible and realistic product or service that can help us reduce food waste? It leads to throwing food that is still good for consumption: it is estimated that every year one third of food produced for human consumption is wasted. It produces more than what is consumed: if we calculate the area needed each year to grow food that will never be consumed, we would exceed the whole China. It is a huge problem, also due to the waste of resources used for production (energy, water, land ...) and to increase emissions. The theme of food waste is also used among the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) and, on a global level, sensitivity is increasing on this issue.

Mobility: How can we develop a feasible and realistic product or service that encourages the choice of sustainable mobility? Sustainable mobility is a path where everyone, citizens, car manufacturers and public administrators share a new way of moving. Transport consumes one fifth of the primary energy produced in the world. 40% is used by urban traffic. Sustainable mobility means giving people the opportunity to move freely, with new transports, new technologies and projects, ideas and practices that reduce environmental impact, maximizing quality of life, safety, efficiency, intelligence and speed of travel. Only a better use of public resources to improve transport, with shared and eco-sustainable public services, can make our cities safer and livable and support and increase employment and the economy. Cities and administrations are working to create an infrastructural and organizational network that leads to zero-emission mobility. Here's what sustainable mobility is: a path where everyone chooses to share a new way of moving.

Challenge vision

Water management: What happens if we re-imagine our use of water in everyday life? How could we push the community and citizens to reflect on their behavior regarding water consumption? How could we make citizens aware of water conservation issues? In what ways we could awaken a new curiosity and personal willingness to change the habits and behavior of each of us, not only in our private life, but also in community life, to exchange and experiment new practices, to use new apps and dedicated services, to inquire about progress in the field and all the new opportunities that technology offers us in this area? The Challenge is part of the macro-theme "Human Behavior": how can we find a solution that is in line with this topic?

Food waste: How could we improve the food consumption experience by reducing waste? How to learn to plan their purchases, keep them at their best, check the expiration dates ...?How to use food that is not collected and remains in the fields or in greenhouses, food not sold and / or not consumed (from shops, supermarkets, restaurants, etc.), waste from primary processing (eg grapes, olives, wheat, etc.)?The Challenge is part of the macro-theme "Human Behavior": how can we find a solution that is in line with this topic?

Mobility: What happens if we re-imagine the transport system? How could we push the community and citizens to reflect on their mobility systems? How could we make citizens aware of the use of different means of transport? How to bring individuals closer to the topics of computer literacy, technology, connected cars, the sharing economy, smart cities, the most modern infrastructures, the progressive electrification of cars? In what ways we could awaken a new curiosity and personal willingness to change habits and behaviour of each of us, to exchange and experiment with new means of transport, to use new apps, to learn about progress in the sector and all new opportunities that our cities offer us?The Challenge is part of the macro-theme "Human Behavior": how can we find a solution that is in line with this topic?

Climate Change: a challenging issue for Mantua!

We would like to work with young people in order to tackle climate change and inspire them to find new ideas to make our city more sustainable and to live well in a rapidly changing environment.
