Agriculture is a major contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions. The majority of food is produced in rural areas and consumed in urban areas -like the municipality of Nicosia-, meaning transport emissions are also added to the equation. Not to mention that some 88 million tonnes of food are wasted every year in the EU alone.
Interventions are needed at all stages of the food system. The municipality of Nicosia could become more efficient in the production and consumption of food, reducing resources used (i.e. water), minimising transport, and eliminating food losses and waste.
