In recent decades, extreme weather events such as heat waves, cold waves, intense storms and droughts have become more frequent and more intense. Further unprecedented increases are expected, making the development of resilience an urgent need for all cities.

Challenge description

In order to make our city more resistant to extreme weather events, we are looking for creative solutions to sensitise urban society to the consequences of climate change and to inform them about adaptation options in relevant areas so that they can then take action themselves. Possible fields of action are:

Public Health and Social Infrastructure
City society and city structure
Traffic and air quality
Urban water resources management
Buildings and building materials
Industry, commerce and tourism
Green areas, agriculture and forestry, biodiversity

Challenge vision

Our goal is a climate-friendly urban structure that can withstand any heat wave and any thunderstorm, thus helping to maintain and improve the quality of urban life. The people of Mannheim are strengthened as urban actors by knowing the risks and dangers of extreme weather events and acting accordingly. Awareness and adaptability increase as a result of the multiplier effect of the citizens.
