Challenge description

Context :

Transforming the energy system of a municipality poses many challenges. This is even more true if we consider that we must accelerate the pace and speed of these transformations and all the subjects that are linked to them: spatial planning, architecture, development plan, changes in energy demand, mobility, heating, electricity supply, behavior of the population, communal dynamics, etc...

What solutions to develop ? How can we accelerate this transition, to involve the different actors, and finally, to finance this transition ? Technical solutions certainly exist, but how to anticipate future demands and therefore choose the appropriate scenario ? What dynamics can be put in place to enable a municipality to make decisions, to have the necessary expertise available and to involve and convince all the stakeholders ?

Municipalities, especially small ones, do not necessarily have the skills and the resources to face this challenge.

Challenge vision

Expeted results (from participants) :

Climathon Sion participants are invited to invent the future of the energy of a town in Valai, 100% renewable and indigenous. The scenario will have to be possible to implement by 2050 and in particular to present :

  • The expected evolution of energy consumption (including mobility).
  • The evolution of the demand,
  • The technical solution(s) that can be proposed/imagined
  • The process that can bu put in place (approach and methodology of implementation)
  • The role of municipal and cantonal stakeholders
  • Models to finance the transition
  • The measrures to be implemented by the various actors (for exemple a calendar of main actions over the next few years). The implementation of some of these actions may be detailed

The proposal will take into consideration the 6 domains of the energy cities:

  • Developement, urban and regional planning
  • Buildings of the community and facilities (as well as the real estate park on the territory of the municipality)
  • Supply and depollution
  • Mobility
  • Internal organization
  • Collaboration and communication

Built on the basis of a concrete case, the proposal will have to be made generic in order to be applied to other Valais municipalities.
