Waste

Develop sustainable waste management strategies and solutions to Nairobi's current unsafe waste handling practices

Challenge description

Nairobi generates more than 2500 tonnes of waste daily whereby 60% of this collected waste is disposed at the official designated dumpsite in Dandora. There are many actors along the waste management value chain most of whom serve in isolation collecting and indiscriminately disposing in the open, in rivers and by road reserves. This trends elicits the development of illegal dumpsites which exacerbate the challenge of waste management through burning of waste that has a high impact on the quality of air that city residents breathe through the resultant air pollution.

Challenge vision

Sustainable waste management strategies and solutions would offer great impact to the city that has been struggling with waste management that is estimated to be about 60% composed of organic waste. These solutions and interventions will have a tremendous impact in reducing methane emissions from the waste generated in the city, improving air quality and conversion of waste to resources aiming towards community driven approaches with support from the city county government for full responsibility and management along this value chain
