Sustainable production, responsible consumption

Food waste

Let's think about the ways we can minimize the amount of food wasted in our homes, workplaces, hotels, restaurants, etc.

Challenge description

Today, more than 30% of all the food produced in the world is wasted, whilst more than 800 million people suffer from hunger and malnutrition. The World’s population is forecast to grow from 7 to 9.6 billion during the next 35 years, placing our natural resources under increasing pressure. It is therefore simply unacceptable to waste food that could be consumed.

On the other side consumers increased demand for “fresh” products, in ever more convenient methods, is seemingly in direct opposition to practices that would seem to mitigate waste.

Also Lots of supermarkets and grocers want to donate food before they become waste, but sometimes finding recipients nearby is hard and can take time. Could we make the connection between donor and recipients faster and easier?

A progress report suggests that governments and businesses need to do more if they're going to meet Sustainable Development Goal 12.3, which calls for the world to halve food loss and waste by 2030.
