Sustainable food production and consumption

How can we ensure clean and safe food from farm to fork?

We all know and are experiencing the risk of known and unknown contamination of materials that are not up to food grade in to what we eat. In order to overcome such dilemma, there is a severe need to ensure safe and sustainable production and consumption of food starting from farm to fork.

Challenge description

Extreme use of inorganic fertilizers and pesticides in agricultural lands has lead to many health hazards around Batticaloa. Therefore, immediate replacement of such hazardous agriculture practices has to be replaced with safe and economically viable agriculture practices as well as food processing and handling practices. For instance, use of lunch sheets and plastic water bottles itself has become a threat to human race by its hazardous ingradients at the same time, accumulation of such in the environment leads to various problems such as prevailing in food chain without decaying.

Challenge vision

Strategies for sustainable food production and consumption while ensuring a circular economy that is designed to benefit businesses, society, and the environment. In contrast to the ‘take-make-waste’ linear model, a regenerative design that aims to gradually decouple growth from the consumption of finite resources that is feasible for Batticaloa is expected to be proposed by the subject matter experts and the participants.
